Two earlier captures give the word unofficial
a clearer Discord-specific setting. In June 2023, SuddenlyEngineer wrote, Mods of the unofficial discord don't get anything fun.
In August 2024, after a participant asked about product shortages, the account replied, why are you posting on an unofficial discord instead of emailing the store.
The first sentence refers to the moderator group without expressly claiming membership; the later 2026 statement above supplies the direct moderator self-description.

notice. In R-002, Suddenly_Engineer says the moderators are trying to clean this up.
In R-003, the account appears with a Moderator label and tells the poster to stop spamming the subreddit. Reddit’s public interface does not identify which moderator operated the removal control, but the account’s participation in managing the discussions is visible.
R-004 is not a moderator removal: Reddit says the original poster deleted it. The same page does show Suddenly_Engineer, labeled Moderator, linking to a Ubiquiti representative’s statement and dismissing the reported vulnerability as a non-issue.
This publication treats that as documented narrative shaping, while making no claim that Ubiquiti directed the comment.

Reddit and Discord removed Tom as a moderator
On August 28, 2026, both moderator teams announced that Tom would be removed. Their announcements say he moderated before joining Ubiquiti, disclosed the employment to the teams after he was hired, and continued under internal oversight because they valued his contributions.
SuddenlyEngineer agreed with the decision. He said he should have stepped down years earlier, explained that he had tried to separate personal use from another account carrying a Ubiquiti employee tag, and acknowledged that keeping moderation privileges undermined community trust.

The team’s own account confirms prior knowledge
Jon, the server owner, says Tom disclosed his employment to the team immediately. Nevyn says Tom intended to step down in May 2022, but another moderator proposed retaining the personal moderator account while adding a separate official account. Nevyn says the proposal received immediate support.
When members questioned the concealment and loss of trust, Jon described criticism as jealousy and told a member to grow up. The Discord moderator t.c.o.a., displayed as spot, said the group had laughed our asses off
while Tom used the separate accounts, told critics to leave, and called the server a benevolent dictatorship.
Several members tied that nondisclosure to the credibility of Tom’s advice. DukeChocula went further and asked whether alleged product promotion by an undisclosed employee violated 16 CFR § 255.5. Jon responded oh my god
and eye-roll emojis; the export records no substantive answer. That is a documented community concern, not a legal finding by this publication.

In the ensuing discussion, LifeChange0900 and prisonerofmemewar separately linked this investigation. Later captures preserve each comment’s matching reply position with the link-bearing text replaced by Comment removed by moderator.
Neither notice identifies a moderator or cites a rule. Both comments concerned Ubiquiti, and the supplied record contains no indication that either comment was AI-generated. Two users placed the same evidence link in separate branches and moderators removed both. This publication concludes that the team was actively suppressing the link while leaving the responsible actor or actors and any undisclosed rationale unresolved.

Removal addresses the individual conflict, not the system
Members in the UWC thread asked whether moderators worked for Ubiquiti, requested disclosure, and challenged the team’s compliance with company requests. Those objections establish a documented legitimacy problem within the community, though the thread cannot be presented as a formal vote of every member.

What remains unresolved
- Who performed any specific removal or sanction unless the source names the actor.
- The full scope, frequency, and chain of responsibility for any company-influenced moderation request.
- Whether a professional affiliation was disclosed to ordinary community members at each relevant time.
- Whether all Reddit and Discord moderator permissions described in the August 28 announcements have now been technically revoked.
Continued reporting should seek those records and revise the findings if they change the account. Until then, the gaps remain stated limits rather than spaces to be filled by assumption.
